Looking Beyond the Symptoms
Over the past several years, many residents have noticed a growing homeless population throughout Corpus Christi. Rising housing costs, inflation, and stagnant wages have placed increasing pressure on families who are already living paycheck to paycheck. For some, a single unexpected expense, medical emergency, or job loss can create a chain reaction that leads to housing instability and, ultimately, homelessness.
This is not simply a challenge affecting a small segment of our community. It impacts public safety, economic development, neighborhood quality of life, and most importantly, the lives of our fellow citizens who are struggling to find stability.
We need a thoughtful, coordinated approach that focuses not only on responding to homelessness, but on preventing it whenever possible.
A Personal Commitment
This issue is especially important to me because homelessness has touched my own family.
For a period of time, my father lived on the streets. That experience gave me a firsthand understanding of how complicated these situations can be and how difficult it can be for people to regain stability once they have lost it.
It also taught me that homelessness is rarely the result of a single event. More often, it is the result of multiple challenges compounding over time.
That perspective has shaped my commitment to helping find practical solutions that address the root causes of homelessness while treating every person with dignity and respect.
Strengthening Community Partnerships
For more than a decade, I have served on the boards of nonprofit organizations working to address homelessness and housing insecurity in our community. What I have learned is that many organizations are doing incredible work, often with limited resources and a tremendous amount of dedication from volunteers, donors, and staff. The challenge is that these organizations frequently compete for the same grants, donations, and funding sources while often addressing similar needs.
I believe the City of Corpus Christi should take a stronger leadership role in helping coordinate these efforts and identifying opportunities for collaboration.
When organizations work together toward common goals, resources can be used more effectively and better outcomes can be achieved for those who need help the most.
Expanding Affordable Housing Opportunities
One of the most effective ways to address homelessness is to prevent it before it starts.
That begins with housing.
While recent discussions have focused heavily on workforce housing, we must also recognize that many residents live well below the median household income and face significant challenges finding housing they can afford. I believe we need to work more closely with the Corpus Christi Housing Authority and other housing partners to ensure that affordable housing options are available for residents across a wide range of income levels.
Expanding access to housing assistance programs and increasing the availability of affordable housing can help prevent vulnerable families and individuals from falling into homelessness in the first place.
Prevention Is the Best Solution
Once someone becomes homeless, the challenges often multiply. Employment becomes more difficult. Healthcare becomes harder to access. Transportation becomes unreliable. Reestablishing stability becomes increasingly complex. That is why prevention must be a central part of our strategy.
Every family that remains housed, every veteran who receives support before reaching a crisis, and every individual who can maintain stable housing represents a success for both that person and our community as a whole.
Investing in prevention is not only compassionate, it is practical.
Working Toward Lasting Solutions
There is no single program or policy that will eliminate homelessness overnight. Real progress will require cooperation between local government, nonprofit organizations, housing providers, businesses, faith-based organizations, and community leaders. My goal is to help bring those groups together, improve coordination, expand housing opportunities, and focus on solutions that address the causes of homelessness rather than simply reacting to the consequences.
When we approach this challenge with compassion, accountability, and a commitment to collaboration, we can create better outcomes for those in need while strengthening the entire community.
Corpus Christi is at its best when we look out for one another. Addressing homelessness is an opportunity to do exactly that.

By expanding trails, improving access to our waterways, supporting local businesses, and strengthening connections between neighborhoods and amenities, we can create a healthier, more vibrant community that attracts and retains talent.
Supporting Those who Protect UsStrong public safety begins with supporting our police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and emergency dispatchers. By improving response times, investing in prevention, and expanding mental health resources for first responders, we can keep our community safe while ensuring those who serve us receive the support they deserve.
